"Posterior" is an anatomical term that refers to the direction towards the back end of an organism or structure. Derived from the Latin term "posterus", which means "coming after", it is typically used to denote locations that are situated behind a reference point.

In the context of neuroscience and human anatomy, when one refers to the "posterior" aspect of the brain, they're indicating a direction towards the back of the brain or towards the back of the head. For instance, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is a part of the brain situated towards the back, just above the cerebellum.

However, due to the bend in the neural axis of bipedal organisms, "posterior" can sometimes lead to ambiguity when discussing parts of the brainstem or spinal cord. In these instances, neuroanatomists often use the term "caudal" instead, which denotes a direction towards the tail or bottom of the spinal cord.

In animals with a horizontal orientation, like four-legged mammals, "posterior" usually indicates a direction towards the tail.
